"Neither Trump nor Putin": MPs travel to the United States, Argentina and Hungary to "avoid seeing France fall apart"

Green, Macronist, and Socialist parliamentarians are planning a trip to "illiberal democracies" to understand their shift and prevent it from happening in France.

This is an unprecedented move: a trip by left-wing and Macronist parliamentarians, who are currently booking their tickets for departure in early June, each with a different destination. One will go to Hungary, another to Argentina, and still others to the United States, the Netherlands, Romania, India, Turkey... Countries that have more or less recently become " illiberal democracies ," where residents do not receive the same treatment, where justice has been mistreated, since the election of a new leader. This is the case recently of Donald Trump, but also of the Argentinian Javier Milei , the Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdoğan , and the Indian Narendra Modi.

These elected officials, like the ecologists Cyrielle Châtelain, David Cormand, Mélanie Vogel, the socialist mayor of Nantes Johanna Rolland or the spokesperson for the Macronist deputies Eleonore Caroit, want to meet those who have witnessed this shift. The first targets of these regimes: journalists, entrepreneurs, intellectuals, associations, some of whom have become opponents. With several objectives, for the one who launched the initiative, Pouria Amirshahi of the ecologist group: "Understand what is happening elsewhere to avoid tipping over in France" , while the National Rally continues to progress.

They're not just going there to talk. The goal is also to build a bridge with them, an international network, a " humanist axis " that, according to Pouria Amirshahi, no longer exists. "Spaces for discussion, for political construction," in an attempt to confront an organization that is growing in power: this " reactionary international " that Emmanuel Macron speaks of, these leaders notably gathered at the inauguration of American President Donald Trump, Javier Milei, Viktor Orbán, and even the head of the Italian government Giorgia Meloni.

This is above all a work of reflection, without necessarily concrete results at the end. A reconstruction of this entire experience is planned for the festival of left-wing ideas in La Charité-sur-Loire in July, in a book too, perhaps, with the idea behind all this to awaken consciences, to call for a surge with the rallying cry: "Neither Trump, nor Putin" . But for the moment this "awakening" desired by these parliamentarians is struggling, since there are only about twenty of them at the start.
